BitMart Closes After 9 Years, Listings and Withdrawals Outrage Follow

The nine-year-old crypto exchange will halt all trading by August 26 joining BitMEX to announce closure the last week. Its BMX token crashed 58%, and users are outraged about withdrawal concerns and exploitative listings.

BitMart Closes After 9 Years, Listings and Withdrawals Outrage Follow

BitMart is shutting down, joining a long list of 2026 crypto casualties. The nine-year-old crypto exchange announced an "orderly wind-down" on July 26, halting new registrations, deposits, and trading positions that same day at 01:30 UTC. All trading ends on August 26, and the platform closes fully on January 31, 2027.

The exchange's official notice blamed "operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction" without further detail. Its BMX token fell 58% within 24 hours, extending a roughly 70% year-long slide and cutting the token's value to about $27 million. Users must submit withdrawal requests before 05:00 UTC on August 26.

Withdrawals are supposedly open throughout the wind-down, but the on-chain record tells a thinner story. Lookonchain counted just 58 wallets pulling roughly $805,000 in the first 24 hours, with one eight-hour stretch showing no withdrawals at all. Traders on X flagged test transfers stuck in "processing" for hours and claimed that withdrawals of certain coins have been little to zero.

BitMart also caught flak for listing a new token yesterday and then posting the closure tweet on X less than two hours later.

Another tweet claims the crypto exchange charged $30k for a listing only 4 days before the announcement.

BitMart Follows BitMEX Out the Door as Speculators Move On

BitMart is the second major venue to fold in a week. BitMEX, which invented the 100x perpetual swap, shuts down on September 23 after 11 years. Both were built on high-leverage crypto speculation, and that crowd is leaving.

BitMart's trading volume on CoinGecko tells the story: trading volume has crashed from over $10 billion per day on February 7th to just over $1 billion daily since the second week of June 2026.

Prediction markets are absorbing a chunk of it. Kalshi cleared $33 billion and Polymarket nearly $14 billion in June, and both launched crypto perpetuals this year. The leverage that made BitMEX famous is migrating to event contracts and online betting.

What This Means for Players

If you hold funds on BitMart, it's wise to withdraw now and not wait for the deadline. Verify your identity early, and ignore anyone demanding an "expedited processing fee." BitMart says it never asks for one.

The wider signal is clear: speculative money is draining from crypto exchanges toward prediction markets and betting platforms, and the next closure notice may not offer this much runway.
