BitMEX to Shut Down September 23 After 11-Year Run

Crypto derivatives pioneer BitMEX will close on September 23, giving traders two months to unwind positions and withdraw their funds before the platform goes dark.

BitMEX Shutting Down

BitMEX will shut down its exchange on September 23, 2026 at 04:00 UTC, ending a controversial 11-year run for the platform that spearheaded the expansion of leveraged crypto products. Owner HDR Global Trading Limited made the call after a strategic review of the business and the broader crypto industry. New account registrations stopped immediately.

BitMEX is widely known for pioneering the 100x leverage perpetual swap (specifically the XBTUSD contract launched in 2016). This innovation fundamentally transformed the cryptocurrency markets by allowing traders to speculate on Bitcoin with high leverage without ever having to manage a contract expiration date.

The exchange began to decline after US authorities began targeting them for financial violations. Co-founder Arthur Hayes' controversial coconuts bribery joke in 2019 was used by prosecutors as evidence of a deliberate strategy to avoid U.S. regulation and intentionally bypass anti-money laundering (AML) protocols.

The company pleaded guilty to Bank Secrecy Act violations in 2024 and paid $100 million in penalties, then President Trump pardoned founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed in March 2025.

What This Means for BitMEX Traders

The wind-down is phased. BitMEX's closure notice applies risk limits from August 26 at 04:00 UTC that block new positions and leave traders able only to reduce what they already hold.

From that point, the exchange will force close open positions to unwind the market in an orderly way, and anything still open at the closure time gets shut automatically.

Staked BMEX tokens have already been unstaked and returned to holder accounts.

Leave Funds on the Platform and BitMEX Starts Charging

Verified users who fail to withdraw by the deadline will be charged $50 equivalent or 1% per year, whichever is greater, deducted monthly from the remaining balance. That fee can rise later with notice.

Withdrawals and login access continue after the shutdown, but BitMEX flagged possible delays on slow-confirming chains such as Bitcoin, and warned that no priority or expedited withdrawal service exists. Anyone offering one is running a phishing scam.

Impact on Industry

BitMEX built the product that turned crypto price speculation into something close to a casino floor, and it says it never lost user funds to a hack across the full 11 years.

The dates now matter more than the history: positions freeze on August 26, and the exchange goes dark four weeks later.
