Jelitics has posted what he calls the full story behind his robot online identity, confirming he is not an Indonesian tobacco shop owner.
He says his longtime graphic designer, who is from Indonesia, draws the robot. When Jelitics wanted to help him build a business of his own, the designer chose to open a tobacco shop. Jelitics helped get it started, they used the robot as the shop’s branding, and that same robot became Jelitics’ online persona.
“So no, I’m not actually an Indonesian tobacco shop owner,” he wrote. “I just helped a friend start a business, and we’ve been running with the robot ever since.”
In a follow-up he said the friend’s shop has grown into multiple locations and that the friend is now a local celebrity in his village. Jelitics did not say how much money he put in.
